Types of Energy Calculations by Location
Different types of energy calculations are used depending on your location. Each type of calculation serves a distinct purpose and helps ensure that energy efficiency standards are met.
Title 24 Energy Calculations (California)
Title 24 energy calculations are based on the California Building Standards Code. They ensure that new and existing buildings meet certain energy efficiency standards, including minimum insulation requirements, window U-factor and SHGC values, HVAC sizing, and lighting specifications.
Rescheck (Residential — Outside California)
Rescheck is a software tool developed by the U.S. Department of Energy for demonstrating compliance with the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). It is commonly required for residential building permits in most states outside of California. Rescheck evaluates:
- Wall, ceiling, and floor insulation
- Window and door thermal performance
- Foundation insulation requirements
Comcheck (Commercial — Outside California)
Comcheck is the commercial counterpart to Rescheck, also developed by the DOE. It demonstrates compliance with commercial energy codes including:

- Service water heating
